{"id":431,"date":"2019-04-14T08:03:56","date_gmt":"2019-04-14T08:03:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/?p=431"},"modified":"2021-08-19T03:16:15","modified_gmt":"2021-08-19T03:16:15","slug":"trial-period-a-short-story-now-on-kindle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/?p=431","title":{"rendered":"Trial Period, a short story, now on Kindle."},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-432\" src=\"https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/trialPeriodCover-640x1024.jpg\" alt=\"trialPeriodCover\" width=\"640\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/trialPeriodCover-640x1024.jpg 640w, https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/trialPeriodCover-188x300.jpg 188w, https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/trialPeriodCover-768x1229.jpg 768w, https:\/\/undinestudios.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/trialPeriodCover.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Though progress with <em>A Troll and his Bard<\/em> has been a little slow lately, I&#8217;ve been trucking along with several short stories.\u00a0 The first of these is <em>Trial Period<\/em>, which went live on Amazon\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Trial-Period-Ben-Haskett-ebook\/dp\/B07QCJDCXG\/\">You can grab it on Kindle for $1.99<\/a>.\u00a0 <em>Trial Period<\/em> is a short story wherein an unnamed narrator shares anecdotes about a three-year period where mysterious entities reminiscent of genies lurked in the most unlikely of places.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a little south of 8.5 thousand words, which comes out to around 25 pages.<\/p>\n<p>Haha, I told my friends about it and managed to sell about 12 copies (thank you to all my friend and family who nabbed it!).\u00a0 It was enough to briefly get me to #4 in the (admittedly very specific) category of &#8220;Best Sellers in 45-Minute Science Fiction &amp; Fantasy Short Reads.&#8221;\u00a0 Sweet, I&#8217;ll take it!<\/p>\n<p>I wrote <em>Trial Period<\/em> in late 2018 and then submitted the short story to a magazine.\u00a0 It was rejected, but I&#8217;d be lying if I said I was surprised&#8211;I\u00a0recognized\u00a0immediately after hitting &#8220;submit&#8221; that I was too hasty in submitting it. Should have sat on it a little longer.\u00a0 After the rejection, I spent time shaving words off here and there (about 1.7 thousand in the end), tightening up the text, trying on several title changes.\u00a0 I\u2019m very happy with it now and wish I&#8217;d come this far before submitting it to that magazine, but decided in the end not to submit it to any other magazines.\u00a0 For one thing, the story\u2019s word count is over most publications\u2019 limits.<\/p>\n<p>For another, and more importantly, the stream-of-consciousness monologue the story consists of is probably far too informal for traditional publication.<\/p>\n<p>So, self-publishing it is.<\/p>\n<p>Despite <em>Trial Period<\/em>\u2019s informal delivery, I do hope you enjoy it.<\/p>\n<p>Ben<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Though progress with A Troll and his Bard has been a little slow lately, I&#8217;ve been trucking along with several short stories.\u00a0 The first of these is Trial Period, which went live on Amazon\u00a0last week.
